Real Iceland stops, photos and planning notes from the road

Why these field notes exist

These notes are based on recent first-hand Iceland travel, including driving the Ring Road twice in one month. The goal is to help you plan better before booking — not to push booking links.

Place Notes

Recent stops, with planning context

Each card includes a quick field note, a planning note, and the route shape it fits best into. Use them to sense-check your Iceland route before locking in hotels, cars or tours.

Place Note

Skógafoss

  • South Coast
  • Waterfall
  • Ring Road
  • Popular stop

Skógafoss is one of the classic South Coast waterfall stops and still earns its place on most first-time routes. It is easy to include, impressive up close, and works well as part of a South Coast driving day.

Planning note

Because Skógafoss is popular and easy to access, expect other visitors in summer. It still fits well into most South Coast plans, but do not overload the same day with too many major stops.

Fits well with: Seljalandsfoss, Dyrhólaey, Reynisfjara, Vík, South Coast route

Place Note

Dyrhólaey

  • South Coast
  • Near Vík
  • Viewpoint
  • Ring Road

Dyrhólaey is one of the strongest viewpoint stops near Vík. If you are already planning Reynisfjara or the Vík area, it is worth considering.

Planning note

Works well with Reynisfjara and Vík, but do not underestimate South Coast driving times in summer.

Fits well with: Reynisfjara, Vík, Skógafoss, South Coast overnight stop

Place Note

Reynisfjara

  • South Coast
  • Black Sand Beach
  • Near Vík
  • Safety awareness

Reynisfjara is still worth visiting, even if it has changed and can feel busy. The landscape, basalt columns and black beach atmosphere are still memorable.

Planning note

Treat this beach seriously. Stay far from the water and check official safety guidance before visiting.

Fits well with: Dyrhólaey, Vík, Skógafoss, South Coast route

Always respect Reynisfjara and stay well back from the waves.
Place Note

Stjórnarfoss

  • South Iceland
  • Quiet waterfall
  • Near Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Stjórnarfoss is a beautiful quieter stop near the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area. It is the kind of place many visitors miss when they only chase the biggest names.

Planning note

Good as a short stop if you are already staying nearby or passing through with enough time.

Fits well with: Kirkjubæjarklaustur, South Coast to Jökulsárlón route, Southeast Iceland planning

Place Note

Jökulsárlón

  • Southeast Iceland
  • Glacier lagoon
  • Ring Road highlight

Jökulsárlón is still one of the biggest wow-stops on the Ring Road. It is worth planning properly rather than squeezing it into an exhausted driving day.

Planning note

Accommodation near the Southeast can be tricky and expensive in summer if left too late. Plan your overnight stops before locking in the route.

Fits well with: Diamond Beach, Höfn area, Skaftafell area, Southeast Iceland overnight planning

Place Note

Diamond Beach

  • Southeast Iceland
  • Beach
  • Near Jökulsárlón

Diamond Beach is a natural pairing with Jökulsárlón and can be incredible when ice is present on the beach.

Planning note

Conditions vary. Do not plan the whole day around the beach alone, but include it when visiting Jökulsárlón.

Fits well with: Jökulsárlón, Southeast Iceland, glacier lagoon stop

Place Note

Stuðlagil

  • East Iceland
  • Jökuldalur
  • Basalt canyon
  • Ring Road detour

Stuðlagil adds something different to the Ring Road. It gives the East/Northeast part of the trip more variety and feels very different from the South Coast.

Planning note

Worth considering if your route has enough time. Do not add it to an already rushed day without checking driving time and access.

Fits well with: East Iceland, Egilsstaðir area, North/East transition day

Place Note

Hljóðaklettar

  • North Iceland
  • Jökulsárgljúfur
  • Basalt formations
  • North Iceland route

Hljóðaklettar is a striking North Iceland stop with dramatic basalt formations and a very different feeling from the South Coast. It is the kind of place that makes the northern part of the Ring Road feel more special.

Planning note

Best considered together with Ásbyrgi, Dettifoss or the Jökulsárgljúfur area. Do not squeeze it into a rushed day unless the route already has enough time in North Iceland.

Fits well with: Ásbyrgi, Dettifoss, Jökulsárgljúfur, Húsavík, North Iceland route

Place Note

Ásbyrgi

  • North Iceland
  • Canyon
  • Jökulsárgljúfur
  • Favorite place

Ásbyrgi is one of the most special places in Iceland. It feels calm, green and almost hidden compared with the open landscapes of the Ring Road.

Planning note

Give Ásbyrgi enough time if you go north. It deserves more than a rushed stop, especially if visiting the quiet area at the bottom of the canyon near Botnstjörn.

Fits well with: Húsavík, Dettifoss, Hljóðaklettar, Jökulsárgljúfur, North Iceland route
