FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is summer a good time for self-drive in Iceland?
Yes. Long daylight, mostly open roads and easier weather make summer the most comfortable season for a self-drive Iceland trip.
How many days do I need for a self-drive trip?
5–7 days suits the South Coast or Golden Circle plus Snæfellsnes. The full Ring Road is more comfortable in 8–10+ days with buffer time.
Should I drive the Ring Road?
Only with enough time. The full loop is rewarding but needs realistic driving days and buffer time. Shorter trips do better on focused regions.
Do I need a 4x4 in summer?
Not for paved roads. A 4x4 is only required for highland F-roads. Most South Coast, Golden Circle and Ring Road sights are reachable in a standard car in summer.
What should I book first for a summer road trip?
Lock flights first, then the rental car and the overnight stays along your route. Popular summer accommodation sells out months ahead.
