Short answer

Golden Circle for one day, South Coast for the photos

Last updated ·

Short trip or single day: do the Golden Circle. More than a day, or chasing waterfalls and black sand beaches: do the South Coast. Most well-planned first trips include both — Golden Circle as a warm-up day, South Coast as a longer day or overnight push toward Vík.

Side by side

Quick comparison

Golden Circle

  • ~230 km loop from Reykjavík
  • Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss
  • 4–8 hours including stops
  • Easier in winter — shorter and closer to services
  • Best as a day trip, not an overnight
  • Works well for first day or jet-lag day

South Coast

  • Out-and-back — distance is your choice
  • Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, Vík
  • Full day minimum; better as 2–3 days
  • More dramatic landscapes and beaches
  • Overnight in Vík unlocks Jökulsárlón as a feasible next day
  • Longer exposed driving in bad weather

Best for short trips

If you only have one or two days outside Reykjavík

One day: Golden Circle. Two days: Golden Circle one day, South Coast (to Seljalandsfoss/Skógafoss/Reynisfjara) the next. Three days: add a Vík overnight and push to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

Best for self-drive vs tours

How travel style changes the answer

Self-drive

  • Both routes are very drivable on paved roads
  • Golden Circle = tight loop, hard to get lost
  • South Coast = decide turnaround point before you go
  • Check weather and road conditions on road.is before either

Guided tours

  • Both have abundant day-tour options from Reykjavík
  • Tours remove driving stress in winter
  • Combined Golden Circle + South Coast day tours exist — long but doable
  • Smaller groups cost more but stop longer at each site

Winter notes

Which route holds up better in winter

Honest winter trade-offs

  • Golden Circle is safer if a storm comes in — shorter exposure, easier turn-around
  • South Coast in winter is beautiful but weather can close roads beyond Vík with little notice
  • Daylight matters: in December–January you have ~4–5 usable hours
  • If aurora is a priority, a tour-based winter plan from Reykjavík is usually less stressful than self-drive

Driving time

What to know before you commit

Real driving times from Reykjavík

  • Þingvellir: ~45 min
  • Geysir: ~1h 30 min
  • Gullfoss: ~1h 45 min
  • Seljalandsfoss: ~2h
  • Skógafoss: ~2h 15 min
  • Vík: ~2h 30 min
  • Jökulsárlón: ~4h 30 min (don't try this as a day trip from Reykjavík)

Mistakes

What to avoid

Common planning mistakes

  • Trying to combine both into a single self-drive day
  • Pushing to Jökulsárlón and back in one day from Reykjavík
  • Skipping a Vík overnight when you have 3+ South Coast days
  • Underestimating winter driving and daylight
  • Booking a tour without checking pickup time and length

Before booking

What to compare and check

Decisions to lock first

  • How many full days you have outside Reykjavík
  • Self-drive vs tour for each route
  • Whether you want a Vík overnight
  • Season and daylight for your dates
  • Cancellation windows on any tour you book

Always check final price, pickup details, cancellation window and current road conditions on the provider site. Road and weather updates: road.is and safetravel.is (official, non-affiliate).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I do the Golden Circle or the South Coast first?
If you only have one day, do the Golden Circle — it's shorter, closer to Reykjavík and packs three iconic stops (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) into a single loop. The South Coast needs more time to be worth the drive.
Can I do both in one day?
Technically yes via a long guided tour, but you'll see neither well. With your own car it's a very long, tiring day. Better to give each at least a half or full day.
Which is better for first-time visitors?
Most first-time trips include both. Golden Circle is the classic warm-up day. South Coast is the photogenic waterfall and black sand beach day. They complement each other rather than compete.
Which has better waterfalls?
South Coast — Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are the iconic ones. Golden Circle has Gullfoss, which is powerful but a single stop.
Which is easier in winter?
Golden Circle. Shorter distances, more services, and if weather closes in you can turn back to Reykjavík quickly. The South Coast involves longer exposed drives and the weather can change fast.
Which is better for self-drive?
Both are very drivable. Golden Circle is a tight loop (~230 km). South Coast is out-and-back — decide how far east you want to push (Seljalandsfoss, Vík, or Jökulsárlón).
