Seven days is the sweet spot for a first Iceland trip — long enough to reach Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and still keep a buffer day. This guide gives a realistic day-by-day plan with what to compare before booking.

Short answer
Last updated ·
The classic 7-day Iceland trip: 2 nights Reykjavík, then move along the South Coast with overnights in Vík and near Jökulsárlón, back via Hella or Selfoss, return to Reykjavík with a buffer day. You'll see waterfalls, black sand beaches, the glacier lagoon and diamond beach without rushing.
The classic Reykjavík + Golden Circle + South Coast week, at a glance.
Booking warning: Vík and Höfn area stays sell out months ahead in summer — hold these before comparing cars or tours.
Day 1
Planning note: Keep arrival day light. Do not stack a long drive on top of a long flight.
Day 2
Planning note: Useful buffer for jet lag before driving days start.
Day 3
Planning note: Easy loop from Reykjavík; no need to change hotels.
Day 4
Planning note: Reynisfjara sneaker waves are dangerous — check conditions and stay well back from the shoreline.
Day 5
Planning note: The day where overnight base matters most. Driving back to Vík the same night makes for a long day.
Day 6
Planning note: Use this day to absorb anything skipped on the way out.
Day 7
Planning note: Leave a real airport buffer. Do not book the last night far from KEF.
Choose overnight bases before comparing specific hotels. In summer, countryside accommodation near Vík and Höfn can be limited or expensive close to arrival.

Mistakes
At a glance
| Reykjavík + South Coast to Jökulsárlón | Stretch toward the full Ring Road | |
|---|---|---|
| Choose this if | First Iceland trip, want depth over distance, photo stops | Repeat visitor, fine driving 5–6 hours most days |
| Not ideal if | You really want to see the whole country in one trip | First-time visitor or travelling with kids |
| What to book first | Reykjavík hotel (start + end), Vík + Höfn overnights | Every rural overnight (Vík, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri) |
| Car needed? | Yes (2WD summer, 4WD + winter tires Nov–Apr) | Yes — 4WD recommended, never one-way without checking fees |
| Best season | Late May – early Sep, plus winter with care | Mid Jun – early Sep only |
| Mistake to avoid | Doing Jökulsárlón as a same-day return from Reykjavík | Treating 7 days as enough margin for storms or closures |
