Short answer

Reykjavík + Golden Circle + South Coast to Jökulsárlón

Last updated ·

The classic 7-day Iceland trip: 2 nights Reykjavík, then move along the South Coast with overnights in Vík and near Jökulsárlón, back via Hella or Selfoss, return to Reykjavík with a buffer day. You'll see waterfalls, black sand beaches, the glacier lagoon and diamond beach without rushing.

Overview

Trip length
7 days
Route shape
Reykjavík → Golden Circle → South Coast → Jökulsárlón → back to Reykjavík
Best for
First-time visitors who want highlights without a full Ring Road loop
Not ideal for
Travelers expecting to also cover the East Fjords and North Iceland
Average driving
About 2–4 hours on driving days, plus stops
Season note
Works year-round; easier and more flexible in summer and early fall

Booking warning: Vík and Höfn area stays sell out months ahead in summer — hold these before comparing cars or tours.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrive at KEF → Reykjavík

Stops: Keflavík airport pickup, Reykjavík check-in
    Sleep: Reykjavík
Drive: About 45–60 minutes from KEF

Planning note: Keep arrival day light. Do not stack a long drive on top of a long flight.

  2. Day 2

    Reykjavík city day

    Stops: Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, Old Harbour
    Sleep: Reykjavík
    Drive: Walking day

Planning note: Useful buffer for jet lag before driving days start.

  3. Day 3

    Golden Circle loop

    Stops: Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss
    Sleep: Reykjavík
Drive: About 3–4 hours of driving plus stops

Planning note: Easy loop from Reykjavík; no need to change hotels.

  4. Day 4

    Reykjavík → Vík (South Coast)

    Stops: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara
    Sleep: Vík area
Drive: About 2.5–3.5 hours plus stops

Planning note: Reynisfjara sneaker waves are dangerous — check conditions and stay well back from the shoreline.

  5. Day 5

Vík → Jökulsárlón & Diamond Beach

Stops: Fjaðrárgljúfur area, Skaftafell area, Jökulsárlón, Diamond Beach
Sleep: Höfn area, or back toward Vík
Drive: About 3.5–4.5 hours round, plus stops

Planning note: The day where overnight base matters most. Driving back to Vík the same night makes for a long day.

  6. Day 6

    Drive back west, slower stops

Stops: Optional repeat South Coast stops, Hella or Selfoss area
    Sleep: Hella, Selfoss, or Reykjavík
Drive: About 2.5–4 hours depending on base

Planning note: Use this day to absorb anything skipped on the way out.

  7. Day 7

Blue Lagoon area → KEF departure

Stops: Optional Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, Return rental car
    Sleep: Departure day
Drive: About 45–90 minutes depending on stops

Planning note: Leave a real airport buffer. Do not book the last night far from KEF.

Stays that fit this route

  • Reykjavík — for arrival, city day, and Golden Circle (no need to change hotels)
  • Vík area — useful after the first South Coast driving day
  • Höfn area — useful after Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach
  • Hella or Selfoss — useful on the way back west
  • Near KEF or Reykjavík — for the last night before departure

Choose overnight bases before comparing specific hotels. In summer, countryside accommodation near Vík and Höfn can be limited or expensive close to arrival.

Check where to stay first

What to book first

  1. Route shape and overnight bases
  2. Vík and Höfn area stays (limited in summer)
  3. Car rental
  4. Tours and extras
  5. Flexible Reykjavík nights

Day by day

The 7-day plan

Days 1–7

  • 1Day 1 — Land at KEF, pick up car, sleep Reykjavík
  • 2Day 2 — Reykjavík city day (Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, Old Harbour)
  • 3Day 3 — Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss), back to Reykjavík
  • 4Day 4 — Reykjavík → Vík via Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara (sleep Vík)
  • 5Day 5 — Vík → Jökulsárlón & Diamond Beach (sleep near Höfn or back near Vík)
  • 6Day 6 — Drive back west, slower stops; sleep Hella / Selfoss / Reykjavík
  • 7Day 7 — Blue Lagoon en route to KEF / buffer / departure

Variants

Self-drive vs guided alternative

Self-drive (recommended)

  • More flexibility for photo stops and weather
  • Cheaper for 2+ travelers
  • Sleep where you want along the route
  • Best in summer / shoulder season

Guided multi-day tour

  • No driving stress; better for solo / winter
  • Pre-booked hotels along the route
  • Less flexibility, fixed stops and timing
  • Compare 3-day South Coast + Jökulsárlón tours

Mistakes

What to avoid

Seven-day pitfalls

  • Driving Reykjavík → Jökulsárlón → Reykjavík in one day (10+ hours)
  • Trying to add the East Fjords in 7 days — leave that for 10+
  • Booking the last night far from KEF — give yourself airport buffer
  • Underbooking accommodation in Vík and Höfn (they sell out months ahead)

At a glance

South Coast focus vs. push for the Ring Road
Reykjavík + South Coast to JökulsárlónStretch toward the full Ring Road
Choose this ifFirst Iceland trip, want depth over distance, photo stopsRepeat visitor, fine driving 5–6 hours most days
Not ideal ifYou really want to see the whole country in one tripFirst-time visitor or travelling with kids
What to book firstReykjavík hotel (start + end), Vík + Höfn overnightsEvery rural overnight (Vík, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri)
Car needed?Yes (2WD summer, 4WD + winter tires Nov–Apr)Yes — 4WD recommended, never one-way without checking fees
Best seasonLate May – early Sep, plus winter with careMid Jun – early Sep only
Mistake to avoidDoing Jökulsárlón as a same-day return from ReykjavíkTreating 7 days as enough margin for storms or closures
Quick takeaway: On 7 days, most first-time travelers do better with Reykjavík plus South Coast to Jökulsárlón. Stretching for the full Ring Road only fits repeat visitors who are fine with long daily drives and have no kids in tow.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for the Ring Road?
It's the absolute minimum. Most travelers find 8–10 days more enjoyable, with 7 you're driving more than stopping. If 7 is fixed, consider going only as far east as Höfn rather than committing to the full loop.
Should I drive clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Counter-clockwise (south first) is the most popular choice — you hit the biggest highlights early (waterfalls, Reynisfjara, Jökulsárlón), then the quieter East and North.
What about Snæfellsnes?
Snæfellsnes is a brilliant 1–2 day trip from Reykjavík and a great alternative to a rushed Ring Road. With 7 days, you can do Reykjavík + Golden Circle + South Coast to Jökulsárlón + Snæfellsnes day trip comfortably.
Do I need a 4WD?
Not for the main South Coast and Ring Road in summer — a 2WD is fine. In winter or for the F-roads (highlands), 4WD is required. Always pick winter tires from November to April.
