Iceland 7-Day Itinerary: Reykjavík, Golden Circle and South Coast

Seven days is the sweet spot for a first Iceland trip — long enough to reach Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and still keep a buffer day. This guide gives a realistic day-by-day plan with what to compare before booking.

Short answer

Reykjavík + Golden Circle + South Coast to Jökulsárlón

Last updated ·

The classic 7-day Iceland trip: 2 nights Reykjavík, then move along the South Coast with overnights in Vík and near Jökulsárlón, back via Hella or Selfoss, return to Reykjavík with a buffer day. You'll see waterfalls, black sand beaches, the glacier lagoon and diamond beach without rushing.

Day by day

The 7-day plan

Days 1–7

  • 1Day 1 — Land at KEF, pick up car, sleep Reykjavík
  • 2Day 2 — Reykjavík city day (Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, Old Harbour)
  • 3Day 3 — Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss), back to Reykjavík
  • 4Day 4 — Reykjavík → Vík via Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara (sleep Vík)
  • 5Day 5 — Vík → Jökulsárlón & Diamond Beach (sleep near Höfn or back near Vík)
  • 6Day 6 — Drive back west, slower stops; sleep Hella / Selfoss / Reykjavík
  • 7Day 7 — Blue Lagoon en route to KEF / buffer / departure

Variants

Self-drive vs guided alternative

Self-drive (recommended)

  • More flexibility for photo stops and weather
  • Cheaper for 2+ travellers
  • Sleep where you want along the route
  • Best in summer / shoulder season

Guided multi-day tour

  • No driving stress; better for solo / winter
  • Pre-booked hotels along the route
  • Less flexibility, fixed stops and timing
  • Compare 3-day South Coast + Jökulsárlón tours

Mistakes

What to avoid

Seven-day pitfalls

  • Driving Reykjavík → Jökulsárlón → Reykjavík in one day (10+ hours)
  • Trying to add the East Fjords in 7 days — leave that for 10+
  • Booking the last night far from KEF — give yourself airport buffer
  • Underbooking accommodation in Vík and Höfn (they sell out months ahead)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for the Ring Road?
It's the absolute minimum. Most travellers find 8–10 days more enjoyable, with 7 you're driving more than stopping. If 7 is fixed, consider going only as far east as Höfn rather than committing to the full loop.
Should I drive clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Counter-clockwise (south first) is the most popular choice — you hit the biggest highlights early (waterfalls, Reynisfjara, Jökulsárlón), then the quieter East and North.
What about Snæfellsnes?
Snæfellsnes is a brilliant 1–2 day trip from Reykjavík and a great alternative to a rushed Ring Road. With 7 days, you can do Reykjavík + Golden Circle + South Coast to Jökulsárlón + Snæfellsnes day trip comfortably.
Do I need a 4WD?
Not for the main South Coast and Ring Road in summer — a 2WD is fine. In winter or for the F-roads (highlands), 4WD is required. Always pick winter tires from November to April.
