Short answer

A realistic 5-day shape

Last updated ·

Day 1 arrive and recover in Reykjavík. Day 2 the city itself. Day 3 the Golden Circle. Day 4 the South Coast as far as Vík. Day 5 buffer / Blue Lagoon / fly home. This shape works in summer or winter — winter just means more flexibility and tour cancellations.

Day by day

The 5-day plan

Days 1–5

  • 1Day 1 — Land at Keflavík (KEF). Transfer or pick up car. Sleep in Reykjavík. Light dinner, early night.
  • 2Day 2 — Walk Reykjavík: Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, Old Harbour, Sun Voyager. Optional Sky Lagoon evening.
  • 3Day 3 — Golden Circle: Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss (self-drive or guided). Back to Reykjavík.
  • 4Day 4 — South Coast: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, sleep in Vík or return to Reykjavík.
  • 5Day 5 — Buffer / Blue Lagoon on the way to KEF / departure.

Two variants

With a car vs without a car

With a rental car

  • Pick up at KEF on day 1 — saves a transfer
  • Self-drive Golden Circle and South Coast on your own schedule
  • Sleep one night in Vík to slow down day 4
  • More flexible for weather and photo stops

Without a car

  • FlyBus or transfer to Reykjavík on day 1
  • Guided Golden Circle day tour on day 3
  • Guided South Coast day tour on day 4 (long day, 11–12 hours)
  • Easier in winter — no driving stress

Mistakes

What to avoid on a 5-day trip

Common 5-day mistakes

  • Trying to add Jökulsárlón — it's 5+ hours from Reykjavík each way
  • Booking a Northern Lights tour on your last night with no buffer
  • Skipping the buffer day and missing your flight after a road closure
  • Underestimating how tired you'll be on day 1 — don't book a tour that evening

Before booking

What to lock in, in what order

Booking order

  • 1Flights / flight + hotel package
  • 2Reykjavík hotel for 4 nights (or 3 + 1 in Vík)
  • 3Rental car (if self-driving)
  • 4Blue Lagoon time slot for day 5
  • 5Day tours if not self-driving

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough to see Iceland?
It's enough for Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the main South Coast highlights — the trip most first-time visitors picture in their head. It's not enough for the Ring Road, the Westfjords or Snæfellsnes without rushing. For those, plan 7–10 days.
Do I need a car for 5 days?
Not necessarily. You can do the whole itinerary using Reykjavík-based day tours. A rental car gives more flexibility for days 3–5 if you're confident driving.
Can I do this in winter?
Yes, but accept that one or two days may be weather-impacted. Lean on guided tours, build a buffer day, and check Vedur.is and Umferdin.is each morning.
When should I book?
Flights and Reykjavík hotels first, 3–6 months ahead in summer. Rental car next. Blue Lagoon time slot a few weeks before. Day tours 1–2 weeks before, unless it's peak summer.
