Herðubreiðarlindir is reached by highland F-roads. Conditions change quickly and routes can include unbridged river crossings. Always check the live F-road status before you set off — the current status, not a calendar, decides whether you go.
Access
Getting to Herðubreiðarlindir
Herðubreiðarlindir lies in the Askja area of Vatnajökull National Park in the northeast highlands. Access is by F-road, and according to SafeTravel's highland driving guidance:

This guide deliberately does not give river-crossing instructions. If you are not experienced with highland driving, consider a guided highland tour instead of self-driving. Confirm with your rental company that F-road driving is allowed under your specific vehicle and terms.
Hiking
The Herðubreið hike
According to Vatnajökull National Park, there is a marked route from Lindir to the base of Herðubreið, but the route up the mountain itself is not marked. The park describes the full ascent from Lindir as roughly a 12-hour round trip.
Plan it as a serious mountain day
- Start early and only go in suitable weather and visibility.
- Expect navigation on an unmarked summit route — be experienced and equipped.
- Talk to the park rangers about current conditions before setting out.
- Turn back if weather deteriorates; the mountain will still be there.

What is at Herðubreiðarlindir
Herðubreiðarlindir is a spring-fed oasis with lush vegetation in the middle of the highland desert, with hiking routes nearby. Summer rangers are stationed in the Herðubreiðarlindir / Askja area, and huts and campsites operate at Herðubreiðarlindir and Dreki in season (Vatnajökull National Park — Askja).
There are no shops, restaurants or gas stations in the Askja and Kverkfjöll highland area. Bring fuel, food, water and everything you need, and check hut or campsite availability with the park in advance.
